CONCERTS

From The Baltic to the Northern Lights

Sunday, April 22, 2012 — 3:00 p.m.
Westworth United Church 1750 Grosvenor Avenue

Special Guests: Evgeny Guryev / conductor — Stanley Wold conductor / Finnish traditional folk musicians — PJ Buchan / Tenor

Old, new, funny, macho, magic, tragic, patriotic — choral music is in the blood of the peoples of the Baltic and Scandinavian regions. This concert offers a unique window on this world as Artistic Director Yuri Klaz teams up with two guest conductors who also have expertise in Northern European music: Russian Evgeny Guryev, Petrozavodsk State Conservatory; and Norwegian- American Stanley Wold, Professor of Choral Music, University of Minnesota, Duluth. Repertoire will run the gamut from Sibelius and Grieg to Pärt. For added variety, Finnish musicians Diane Jarvi (Jarvenpa) and Ralph Tuttila from Duluth will perform folk songs and play early folk instruments called the kantele and jouhikko.
